        Bovine Serum Albumin

Bovine Serum Albumin Overview

Bovine serum albumin (also known as BSA or "Fraction V") is a serum albumin protein isolated from cows.  Rockland produces BSA in various formats for use in immunology, biochemistry and biotechnology.   BSA immunoassay applications include ELISA (Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay), immunoblots (western blot and dot blot), and immunocytochemistry (immunohistochemistry and immunofluorescence microscopy).  Bovine serum albumin (often from a fetal bovine source) is also used as a nutrient in cell and microbial culture.  In molecular biology BSA is used to stabilize some restriction enzymes during digestion of DNA and to prevent adhesion of the enzyme to reaction tubes, pipet tips, and other vessels.  BSA is considered to be a universal blocking reagent in many applications.   This is because BSA does not affect the functions of other proteins (enzymes) that do not need it for stabilization. BSA is also commonly used to determine the quantity of other proteins, by comparing an unknown quantity of protein to known amounts of BSA in, for instance, the Bradford Protein Assay.   BSA is used because of its stability to increase signal in assays, its lack of effect in many biochemical reactions, and its low cost, since large quantities of it can be readily purified from bovine blood, a byproduct of the cattle industry.

Suggested Products for Common Assays

For ELISA (E), Western Blotting (WB) or Immunohistochemistry (IHC) use BSA-50This convenient and cost effective package size allows for the formulation of BSA in common blocking and diluent solutions used in a variety of immunoassays.  Rockland BSA is immunoglobulin and protease free for optimum assay results.

For Blocking of plates and as a Diluent use BSA-30.  BSA formulated in a 30% solution is stabilized and is convenient for use in many assays as a blocking agent.  BSA solutions can be diluted for use as stabilizers in protein solutions.

For IN Vitro Diagnostics (IVD) use BSA-5kg Raw materials for BSA are sourced from North American sources.  BSA is 100% pure by Agarose Zone Electrophoresis.  Protease and immunoglobulin free, Rockland BSA is low in heavy metals and is ideal for reproducible immunoassays of various types.

For Bradford Protein Assays and other quantitative assays use BSA-10. This smaller package size allows for easy weighing of BSA prior to solution preparation.  Aliquot known standard solutions of bovine serum albumin (BSA) in microcentrifuge tubes at -70° C for long term storage.    BSA solutions can be diluted for use in standard curves for Bradford Protein Assays and other protein quantitative assays.

The Rockland Advantage - USDA Certification

All products of animal origin, including products derived from bovine sources, manufactured by Rockland are derived from starting materials of North American origin.  Collection is performed in United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) inspected facilities and all materials have been inspected and certified to be free of disease.  Diseases associated with bovine products, specifically BSE (Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy) or Mad Cow Disease, have been associated with bovine products originating in Europe.  Rockland only uses bovine products of North American origin.
