Goat Serum

Goat Serum Overview

Rockland offers high quality, cell culture-grade goat serum that provides a source of nutrients and factors critical for optimal cell growth and metabolism. Goat Serum provides a broad spectrum of macromolecules, carrier proteins for lipoid substances and trace elements, attachment and spreading factors, low molecular weight nutrients, and hormones and growth factors that promote cell growth and health. Goat Serum is also used as a component of bioassays, immunoassays or enzyme assays.

Goat Serum vs Normal Goat Serum

  • Goat serum can be effectively used as a substitute of traditional fetal bovine serum (FBS) for supplementation of defined basal media of cell lines, primary cultures and virus production. Goat serum is available as a sterile preparation for use as a cell culture supplement.

  • Normal goat serum (NGS) can be used as an effective blocking agent in a number of immunological techniques since it can successfully reduce nonspecific binding of proteins and antibodies to reaction surfaces and non-specific binding sites. It provides an alternative to bovine serum albumin (BSA) and non-fat dry milk. This blocking agent is recommended for use in immunoassays where the primary antibody was produced in goat, as a source of non-specific serum protein or on tissue for immunohistochemical applications.

The Rockland Advantage: Goat Serum

Rockland have developed a highly precise and efficient method for the purification of goat serum appropriate for cell culture of mammalian and other eukaryotic cell lines and tissues. Likewise, Rockland also provides normal goat serum (NGS) that is fully compatible with most immunoassays including western blot, ELISA, immunofluorescence, immunohistochemistry and immunoprecipitation.

Suggested Products for Common Assays

For ELISA (E), Western Blotting (WB) or Immunohistochemistry (IHC) use our highly purified Goat Gamma Globulin Fraction as a suitable isotype control in a variety of immunoassays. Also, Lyophilized Goat Serum can be used as a blocking agent to treat plastic surfaces, membrane or tissue after they have been sensitized with primary antibody or antigen.
For in vitro cell culture, sterile goat serum is used as a supplement to cell culture media providing a broad spectrum of macromolecules and low molecular weight nutrients. Be certain to maintain Good Cell Culture Practice, and maintain sterility of cultures that require media supplementation.
