Background

ONPG can be utilized as both a colorimetric and spectrophotometric detectable substrate for use with assays utilizing beta-galactosidase. Normally colorless, beta-galactosidase can hydrolyze ONPG into a yellow compound (ortho-nitrophenol) which can be detectable colorimetrically as an indicator of enzyme rate.
